The Holidays

We are rapidly approaching the season of the holidays, and many conscientious ones are now questioning what course they may pursue that will be pleasing in the sight of God. By the world the holidays are spent in frivolity and extravagance, gluttony and display. It is the prevailing custom at this time to make and receive presents. And it is no small burden upon the mind to know how to distribute these gifts among friends so that none will feel slighted. It is a fact that much envy and jealousy are often created by this custom of giving presents.

Thousands of dollars will be worse than thrown away upon the coming Christmas and New Year’s in needless indulgences. But it is our privilege to depart from the customs and practices of this degenerate age, and instead of expending means merely for the gratification of the appetite, or for needless ornaments or articles of clothing, we may make the coming holidays an occasion in which to honor and glorify God.

“Let us” make a decided reform in regard to these festal days. Those who appreciate the gift of God’s dear Son to save them from ruin, now have a favorable opportunity to give tangible proofs of their gratitude by rendering to God their thank offerings. Let old and young lay aside their mites as sacred offerings to God. If we would give to the cause of our Redeemer one-half as much as we have bestowed upon our friends, we would do much good and receive a blessing for giving.

Unity

According to Merriam-Webster unity can be defined as:

the quality or state of not being multiple : oneness

a condition of harmony : accord

the quality or state of being made one : unification

How important is it to have unity that exists within the church today?  It is critical for members to use this characteristic in order to be the example that Christ has given to us.  In Ephesians 2:11-18 it talks about a wall in the Temple and that Gentiles could only go so far and there was an actual sign on the wall that stated if they went beyond that point, they could be put to death.  That wall has been torn down because Jesus laid it all down at the cross.  We’re all the same due to sin unfortunately, but Jesus redeems us, now we all have access to God.  What walls do we create or exist within the church today?  We come from different places, cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities.  There is a text in Hebrews chapter 4 that says let us come boldly to the throne of grace, to come to the very presence of God to find grace and mercy to help us in our time of need.  So, part of recognizing that Christ wants to bring us all into oneness will require what to happen?  We must break down those barriers.  Collectively, we must stay focused in the one message, the one mission, and be focused on what that one faith is, in the one Christ who is our one savior!  We are all made equal at the foot of cross and it is through Christ’s love that we are to achieve oneness as a body for he is our cornerstone and foundation.  Jesus is so hopelessly and helplessly in love with us that he desires to have that closeness in a relationship with us and for us to follow Him, it is there for our taking.  Come together as a unified church body and allow Him to work through you in order to reach those who may not know Him and touch their hearts and  minds; to want to know more and develop a relationship with Him.

In closing, keep this scripture in mind as you go through your week:

Romans 12:4-5

“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
